About Jerboa
Jerboa is an Android app for Lemmy, the federated link aggregator, and version 0.0.88 is available to download here as an APK. It comes from LemmyNet, the same team that develops Lemmy itself. Jerboa does not host anything: it connects to the Lemmy instance where your account lives and shows its communities, posts and comments in a phone-friendly interface.
What Jerboa is for
People who read Lemmy on the phone every day tend to prefer an app to the mobile website. Jerboa gives you the home, local and all feeds, sorting by hot, new and top, threaded comments with collapsing, voting, saving posts and replying. You can subscribe to communities on any instance your server federates with, which in practice means most of the Lemmy network. Several accounts can be added and switched without logging out, handy if you have one account for general use and another on a topic-specific instance. The version number still starts with zero, so expect the interface to keep changing between releases.
Download and installation
The APK on this page is taken from the developers' releases on GitHub, package name com.jerboa. We checked that its signature matches the key of earlier Jerboa releases and scanned the file for malware. The app is also available on Google Play.
- Download the APK and open it.
- Allow the installation from this source if Android asks.
- Launch Jerboa, enter your instance and log in.
You need a Lemmy account
Jerboa is a client, not a service. If you do not have an account yet, pick an instance on the official list at join-lemmy.org/instances — the Lemmy page on this site explains how to choose one. Your account belongs to that instance only; it lets you join communities elsewhere, but not log in to other instances.
Licence and price
Jerboa is free and open source under the GNU AGPLv3 licence, with the code on GitHub. No ads, no paid version.
Alternatives
Instead of Reddit's official app, Jerboa is the obvious choice for Lemmy users who want the developers' own client. The Lemmy apps page lists other clients, and the web interface works in any mobile browser.
Safety and privacy
The app stores your login token on the phone and talks only to the instance you choose. What you post, vote on and save is kept on that instance, whose admins can see it. Use a unique password for each instance and log out of accounts you no longer use.
Requirements
Any current Android phone or tablet with an internet connection and a Lemmy account.
Pros and cons
- Pro: made by the Lemmy team, keeps up with server changes.
- Pro: free, open source, several accounts.
- Con: plain design compared with some third-party clients.
- Con: still pre-release, so some screens change between updates.
